View TourQ. What is the best side of the TranzAlpine train to sit on for the best views?
Departing Christchurch, the right side of the train is widely regarded as the prime position. This is for good reason. It’s from here that you’ll be treated to the most jaw-dropping perspectives of the Waimakariri River Gorge and the vertiginous drama of the Staircase Viaduct as it clings to the mountainside. If you’re heading east from Greymouth toward Christchurch, simply request a seat on the left to enjoy that same spectacular vantage point. That said, the TranzAlpine’s panoramic side windows and glass skylights mean that wherever you settle in, you’re in for an extraordinary alpine experience. There really isn’t a bad seat on this train.
Q. Can you do the TranzAlpine train journey in one day?
Absolutely — and it’s a genuinely memorable way to spend a day. The TranzAlpine departs Christchurch in the morning, spends just under five hours climbing through the heart of the Southern Alps, and rolls into Greymouth around lunchtime. You then have the choice of a onehour
stopover in Greymouth or a three-hour break at the idyllic Lake Brunner (Moana) before the return journey brings you back to Christchurch by evening. It’s a complete alpine adventure without needing a single overnight bag. At LOCO Journeys, while we can absolutely arrange a day return, we’d encourage you to think bigger — extending your trip into a multiday
West Coast package opens up an entirely different world: the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, wild Punakaiki, charming Hokitika and so much more. The TranzAlpine is the perfect gateway to one of New Zealand’s most spectacular coasts.
Q. What is the difference between Scenic Class and Scenic Plus on the TranzAlpine?
Both the Scenic Class and Scenic Plus deliver a thoroughly enjoyable TranzAlpine experience – the difference is in the level of indulgence. Scenic Class gives you everything you need for a classic alpine rail journey: spacious reclining seats, sweeping panoramic windows, generous legroom, access to the iconic open-air viewing carriage, and a walk-up café for snacks and
drinks along the way. Scenic Plus takes things up a notch considerably. It’s an all-inclusive premium experience; it includes regionally inspired hot meals served directly to your seat, paired with New Zealand wines, all accompanied by the attentive service of a dedicated carriage host who brings the passing landscape to life with live storytelling. If you’re looking for a truly special occasion journey, Scenic Plus is hard to beat.
Q. Does the TranzAlpine train run every day of the week?
During the peak summer season – September through to early May the TranzAlpine operates daily, so you have wonderful flexibility. In winter, services run Friday through Monday, which means there are fewer departures to choose from. For travellers hoping to experience the
Southern Alps blanketed in snow, those winter departures are genuinely magical, but they’re also highly sought after. Our strong advice: book your winter TranzAlpine package early. The train does not run on Christmas Day.
Q. Can I book a train package that goes directly from Christchurch to Queenstown?
There’s no direct rail connection between Christchurch and Queenstown, but that’s no reason to miss out on the journey; in fact, it’s an opportunity to experience even more. At LOCO Journeys, we design seamless packages that combine the TranzAlpine rail journey with scenic luxury coach connections, taking you from Christchurch over the Southern Alps to Greymouth, then south along the West Coast past the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers before arriving in Queenstown. It’s arguably the most spectacular way to travel between these two iconic South Island destinations, and we take care of every detail so you can simply sit back and enjoy the ride.
Q. How much does a TranzAlpine ticket cost?
TranzAlpine ticket prices vary depending on the time of year, how far in advance you book, and which class of travel you choose. As a general guide, Scenic Class fares typically start from around NZ$229 per person one way, while Scenic Plus – the all-inclusive premium experienceis priced higher at $499 to reflect the elevated level of dining and service on offer. Peak season departures and popular dates can sell out well in advance, so early booking almost always secures the best available fare. At LOCO Journeys, we don’t just book your train ticket — we build your entire TranzAlpine experience around it. Whether you’re after a simple day return or a fully curated multi-day West Coast TranzAlpine package, we’ll find the right option to suit
your travel style and budget. Get in touch with the team, and we’ll take care of the rest.
Q. When is the best time of year to travel on the TranzAlpine?
Honestly? The TranzAlpine rewards you in every season; it just depends on what kind of adventure you’re after. Summer (December to February) brings long golden days, lush alpine meadows and the full daily service, making it ideal if flexibility is important to you. Autumn (March to May) is arguably the most underrated time to travel; the beech forests turn a gorgeous amber, and the crowds begin to thin. Winter (June to August) is something else entirely. Watching the Southern Alps emerge from a blanket of fresh snow from the warmth of the viewing carriage is genuinely breathtaking — but remember, winter services run Friday to Monday only, so planning ahead is essential. Spring (September to November) sees the landscape come alive again and daily services resume, making it a wonderful shoulder season choice. At LOCO Journeys, we can help you pick the perfect departure to match your travel dates, travel style and the wider West Coast itinerary you’re dreaming of.
Q. Is the TranzAlpine suitable for children and families?
The TranzAlpine is one of the best family rail journeys in the world. Children are absolutely captivated by the experience: the dramatic gorges, the thundering viaducts, the tunnels that plunge you into darkness before opening up to reveal sweeping mountain panoramas. The open-air viewing carriage is a particular favourite with younger travellers, and the café car
keeps everyone fuelled along the way. The journey is just under five hours each way, which is long enough to feel like a proper adventure without becoming a test of endurance for little ones. At LOCO Journeys, we love designing TranzAlpine family packages that make the most of your time on the West Coast – adding glacier walks, glow worm caves, or a night in Hokitika turns a great train day into an unforgettable family holiday. We’d love to help you plan it.
Q. How far in advance should I book the TranzAlpine?
We recommend booking as early as you possibly can – and we say that from experience, not just as good advice. The TranzAlpine is one of the most popular scenic rail journeys on the planet, and certain departures – particularly peak summer dates, school holidays, and winter weekends – sell out months in advance. If you have a specific travel date in mind, don’t wait.
For winter travel, especially, where services only run four days a week, available seats go quickly, and disappointment is very real for those who leave it too late. As a general guide, booking three to six months ahead gives you the best choice of dates and the best available fares. At LOCO Journeys, we handle the booking, the planning and all the logistics — so the
earlier you get in touch, the more we can do to build your perfect TranzAlpine experience around your preferred departure.
Q. What TranzAlpine packages include the West Coast glaciers?
This is one of our favourite questions to answer, because a TranzAlpine glacier package is one of the truly great South Island travel experiences. The journey begins with the train crossing the Southern Alps from Christchurch to Greymouth – an unforgettable rail adventure in its own
right. From there, LOCO Journeys connects you south along the wild West Coast, past Punakaiki’s famous Pancake Rocks, through the lush rainforest of South Westland and on to the twin glaciers of Franz Josef and Fox – two of the most extraordinary natural wonders in New Zealand. Depending on your timeframe and travel style, we can extend the itinerary further into Queenstown, weaving together the very best of the South Island into one
seamless journey. Every element – train tickets, accommodation, coach connections and activities – is arranged by our team so you don’t have to think about a thing. Take a look at our TranzAlpine packages or get in touch and we’ll design something built around you.
Let the TranzAlpine be the highlight of a New Zealand rail holiday, expertly crafted and seamlessly arranged by LOCO Journeys. #liveloco
